A FINAL quarter fadeout cost the Western Jets any chance of causing an upset win against Gippsland Power on Saturday. The Jets were able to match it with their more highly fancied opponents for the majority of the contest until the final quarter when the Power flicked the switch. Gippsland booted eight goals to two in a dominating finish to secure the 56-point win, 17.6 (108) to 7.10 (52). Despite the loss, Spencer White was able to continue his good goal kicking form to finish with three majors and bring his season tally to 23. Around the ground Sam Critchley and Scott Greenhough tried hard but it wasn’t enough to stop the Power.
It wasn’t all bad news for the Jets, who remain in contention for the finals after eighth-placed Geelong went down to Oakleigh. Western is ninth on the ladder, one game behind the Falcons after 13 rounds. This week the Jets will meet top-of-the-table North Ballarat Rebels as they go about trying to cause one of the upsets of the season.
KEILOR proved no match for competition frontrunners Strathmore in the Essendon District Football League on Saturday. The Blues fell 63 points short against the undefeated Mores who opened up a five-goal lead at quarter time and never looked back. Jarrod Garth played a lone hand on the Keilor forward line, booting five goals to continue his outstanding season and further put his name forward as one of the best players in the competition. He was well supported by a hard working Dylan Joyce, but it wasn’t enough to cause the upset as Strathmore steamed to the 16.18 (114) to 7.9 (51) win.The Blues now look unlikely to play finals after slipping to eighth spot on the ladder, equal on wins with Pascoe Vale and Essendon Doutta Stars. The current top four is Strathmore, Greenvale, Aberfeldie and Maribyrnong Park. Keilor will take on Avondale Heights this week and will be out to avenge a close loss from earlier in the season.
KEILOR stormed to an impressive 15-point win over Keysborough in the Men’s Division Two Big V basketball on Saturday. The Thunder set a high standard early and managed to maintain that level throughout the match, winning every quarter to secure the 61-46 victory.
Andrew Freeman was a standout for Keilor, scoring 14 points and winning seven rebounds to help set up the win. He was well supported by Matthew Jukes, who finished the match with 10 points and 11 rebounds. The result sees Keilor move to within striking distance of the top four with just two weeks of competition left. The Thunder sits in fifth spot on the ladder and trail fourth-placed Melton by just three points. There is nothing separating any of the top five teams with just 12 points between first and fifth in what is shaping up to be a close finish to the season. This week Keilor will take on fourth-placed Horsham on Sunday.
A 2-0 WIN to Green Gully over South Melbourne has lifted the Cavaliers to third on the Victorian Premier League ladder. The Gully didn’t have it all their own way early in the contest with South Melbourne striking the woodwork twice in the opening 20 minutes of play. But the longer the match went on, the more Green Gully looked to take control and eventually hit the front through a Brian Vanega goal just before half time.
Vanega wasn’t done there, completing his double in the 74th minute to seel the win.
