WILLIAMSTOWN water police Sergeant David Jaensch has been awarded with a prestigious bravery award.
On 6 January 2009 Sgt Jaensch helped rescue a woman trapped under a capsized catamaran on Port Phillip Bay in Victoria.
He has now received a commendation in Australia’s Bravery Decorations.
Sgt Jaensch helped rescue a police vessel through rough conditions, sighting the catamaran which had been swamped by freak waves.
Several women were clinging to a float still attached to the catamaran by rope.
Working with the skipper of the vessel, Sgt Jaensch devised a plan to save the woman trapped under the upturned hull.
On 30 April, Sgt Jaensch was awarded the Chief Commissioner’s Commendation award for the same incident.
