HOBSONS Bay drivers were encouraged to belt up in a two-week clamp down that focused on seatbelts.
The operation began on 2 August and ran until 14 August and coincides with the 40th anniversary of vehicle restrain legislation, which made it compulsory for passengers to wear a properly secured seatbelt. As of last Wednesday, police had issued two seatbelt offences, one drink driving offence, caught four disqualified drivers, six drivers driving without a licence, one speeding between 10 and 25km over the speed limit and another two drivers speeding 25km over the limit.
Police recorded 32 other traffic offences in the area including unregistered and unroadworthy vehicles. Motorists caught driving without a seatbelt will receive a $239 fine and lose three demerit points. Passengers will also face a $239 fine if found travelling without a seatbelt.
