A HUB of learning, education, recreation and discovery in Williamstown will celebrate its first birthday.
Williamstown Library will celebrate its first birthday in style with roving performers, family craft activities, giant games and music on the deck this Saturday 21 September.
Festivities will run from 10am to 1pm and include a fruit and vegie swap, Friends of Williamstown and Newport Libraries book sale and ‘Willy Library, the film – snapshots of library life’ on loop all morning.
The new UCAN Cafe will be open for business.
Mayor of Hobsons Bay Councillor Angela Altair said it was a wonderful occasion with the library being embraced by the community over the past 12 months.
“In the course of a year, the library has become a thriving community hub with over 180,000 visits, 195,000 loans and 23,000 hours on the computers and WiFi recorded,” Cr Altair said.
“Williamstown Library is a shining example of a vibrant, active library and residents have access to a myriad of high-quality programs and services including art exhibitions, technology training, children’s story and rhyme sessions, research support, film screenings and so much more.”
The official birthday will be part of a week of activities that will include a talk by the architects who designed the library on Thursday, a Mad Hatters’ Birthday Tea Party and a historical walk down Williamstown’s memory lane.
Cr Altair said libraries are no longer just a place for books and now include things like school holiday programs, adult learning, study spaces, the latest technology and cafes.
“I am proud of the library services the council offers its community and know that they are equally as popular with our residents.”
