WILLIAMSTOWN is out of the Victorian Football League premiership race after losing to Geelong by 82 points in the preliminary final on Saturday.
The Seagulls were always going to be under the pump after losing to the Cats twice during the home and away season.
However, many would not have predicted the magnitude of the defeat with Geelong dominating the contest to seal the 24.16 (160) to 11.12 (78) win.
The Cats were led by Josh Walker who kicked five goals while Shane Kersten and Jordan Murdoch combined for seven between them.
In total, 12 Geelong players hit the scoreboard with a major.
Around the ground, George Horlin-Smith and Mitch Brown were outstanding to be among their club’s best players.
For Williamstown, Fletcher Roberts, Anthony Anastasio, Jason Tutt and Jack Johnstone each kicked two goals while captain Ben Jolley fought hard to try and keep the Seagulls in the match.
The result sees Geelong progress to the club’s second successive grand final when it will play Box Hill.
It is also the second year in a row that Williamstown has been bundled out of the VFL finals at the preliminary final stage.
The conclusion of the 2013 season marks the end of an era for Williamstown with the club no longer aligned with the Western Bulldogs and breaking into a standalone model next year.
