STITCH by stitch a group of crafters are enjoying creating with the art of crochet.
Claire Hynes was taught how to crochet from her mother and has been happily passing her lessons onto a willing and eager group of people during her weekly craft class at the Joan Kirner House in WIliiamstown.
“It’s a beautiful skill,” Mrs Hynes said.
Mrs Hynes, who teaches beginners crochet classes, said the art form is audible, easy to learn and was a very useful craft that is making a big come back.
“It’s open to anybody, any age and experience level,” Mrs Hynes said.
“It’s very pleasant to be able to sit down make and something for someone that’s a bit personal and individual.”
Mrs Hynes said crochet has made a big resurgence with millions of people and online communities making and selling crochet pieces.
“Yarns available these days are very exciting.”
“This day and age people are ordering things off the internet especially this generation who are looking for something handmade and a bit different.”
The classes are a chance to learn basic crochet, technique and design with the end result leaving participants with the ability only limited by their imagination.
“I have had people who have no confidence in creating, go from no to creating in a month.”
“It’s about learning hand tensions, once you’ve practised that basic skill people tend to take off with it.”
Mrs Hynes said the classes are very social and a great meeting point for people.
“It’s a very pleasurable outcome to sit and work and make things in company and you learn form the company.”
She said it was very important for beginners to have a watchful eye guiding them when they first start out to assist when errors are made.
“Once they feel comfortable they bring their own technique.”
