WILLIAMSTOWN, Altona and Newport recorded significant water savings over the summer.
City West Water revealed that compared to last year, households had maintained water saving over the hottest part of the year with Williamstown recording a seven per cent drop in water use and Altona and Newport a five per cent drop.
City West Water managing director Anne Barker said rainfall over summer helped households achieve the reduction in water use, and she urged residents to make the most of the cooler weather.
“We need to continue to save water right through winter and spring, and gardeners may not need to water gardens in the coming weeks with moist soils now commonplace at this time of year,” she said.
She said maintaining a seven to eight centimetre layer of mulch and soil wetting agents would help keep moisture in soil.
“The best solution is to watch weather forecasts and where possible let nature water the garden for you, reducing pressure on our vital water storages.”
