Artists take a new look

THE built environment of Hobsons Bay is the inspiration for an art exhibition that invites local artists to interpret sites around the municipality.
The exhibition, entitled “Interpret This”, will see a selection of local artists create interpretations of places in Hobsons Bay that inspire and move them.
Emerging local artist Katherine Dine, one of the featured artists, drew her inspiration from the Newport sub-station, an iconic structure in the area and one she said reflected the industrial urban fabric of Hobsons Bay.
“The whole deterioration of the building and then the way it was fixed up to become an art gallery is really interesting.”
Ms Dine said she found the inspiration for her work by visiting various sites she was familiar with and soaking up the atmosphere at each one.
“I haven’t done anything like this before so I went around to three or four different sites to take photos and then I found I liked the ones from the sub-station the most.”
Her work uses remnants of the sub-station’s previous life; old metal cabinet doors and an old container lid she found around the site.
Ms Dine said she had recently become interested in graffiti as an art form and the exhibition was the perfect vehicle to utilise spray paint in her art.
“We could use any medium we wanted to and there was no real restriction.”
The Louis Joel Arts and Community Centre will be the focal point for the exhibition but residents should also keep their eyes out for two temporary outdoor works.
There will be a video projection on the base of the West Gate Bridge, scheduled for Friday night 30 June, between 8pm and 10pm, at Hyde St, Spotswood and a billboard piece that will appear opposite 350-380 Kororoit Creek Rd, Altona, some time around 28 June.
“Interpret This” runs at the Louis Joel centre, 5 Sargood St, Altona, from tomorrow (28 June) until Tuesday 11 July.
