GREEK tragedy and epic Shakespearian drama will be on stage at the Williamstown Mechanics’ Institute early next month with two travelling performances.
Sophocles’ Oedipus and Shakespeare’s Hamlet will be staged as alternating matinees and evening performances, brought to life by the Eagles Nest Theatre Company.
Actor James Adler, who will take on the weighty role of Hamlet, said the Eagles Nest interpretation would “try to bring out a lot of the unspoken plot lines in the play”, and would expand on some of the peripheral storylines and characters.
Oedipus, meanwhile, will be a “really radical new adaptation”, Mr Adler said, with new material written into the script to show why the question of tragedy is still relevant to modern audiences.
Mr Adler said the company was delighted to be performing in the renovated Mechanics’ Institute, which he said had become a fantastic theatre space.
