THE opening round of the 2006 Jayco Bay Cycling Classic was held in Williamstown last Wednesday.
The circuit was a traditional rectangle of four left-hand corners along streets including Nelson Place, with a tight corner around the cobblestone-lined roundabout at Cole Street shortly after the finish line to test bike-handling skills.
After winning round four of the classic in Geelong, Robbie McEwan, who has won the event six times in nine years, could not make it win number seven.
New Zealand’s 2004 scratch race world champion Greg Henderson and Katie Mactier won the Williamstown round, and Mactier went on to win the women’s race while Hilton Clarke was the overall winner in the men’s race.
