FROM the catwalks of Milan to the runways in Paris, Tuan Pham has big dreams.
The St Albans Secondary College student, who was recently awarded Best New Talent for his designs at the regional Fashion Australia Awards, said his school is the reason for his success.
“I wasn’t thinking about designing and then Mr Bowden, one of the fashion teachers, saw my drawings and thought I should enter,” the 17-year-old said.
“The teachers push me to do more drawing, sewing and to practice my skills.”
Taking out the gong for Best New Talent was a surprise for the Year 11 student who was humbled by the accolade. He has decided to give his prize money back to the school.
“The school spent money on fabric and I don’t like taking all the credit for it. I’m just really grateful for the award,” Tuan said.
Tuan lists famous fashion designers Alexander McQueen and John Galliano as his inspiration but there is one pop star he aspires to design for.
“My wicked dream to design her dresses is Lady GaGa because she wears crazy costumes. That’s my goal,” Tuan said.
St Albans Secondary College Art and Fashion teacher, Michael Bowden said Tuan is dedicated and passionate about fashion design.
“He’s probably a little obsessive compulsive, he is a very hard worker. I know some nights he has sat up all night working,” Mr Bowden said.
“I’ve been at the school for 27 years because of the kids. I find it thrilling that they are just so wonderful.”
The young winner’s advice for other young fashion designers is to demonstrate your potential.
“Don’t be scared, be yourself. It’s your style,” Tuan said.
“The industry is really harsh so you just have to get your name out there.”
