AN INCIDENT before the round eight Victorian Premier League (VPL) match between Melbourne Knights and Heidelberg United, during which two security guards were bashed, is being investigated by police.
It is believed a group of 15-20 men, aged between 18 and 30, approached the gates before kick off and refused to pay the entrance fee.
When confronted, it is alleged some of the men assaulted two security guards outside Heidelberg West’s Olympic Reserve.
The injured were transported to hospital with head and leg injuries. Three other men were also injured when they attempted to intervene.
Football Federation Victoria (FFV) confirmed the incident but stressed the matter was still under investigation. “FFV has a zero-tolerance policy towards bad behaviour at any of its matches and takes this incident seriously,” a statement said. “A full FFV investigation is currently under way in order to determine the circumstances and full facts surrounding the incident. Until the internal investigation has been concluded FFV has nothing further to add at this stage.”
Two people have so far been charged with various offences relating to the incident.
Detectives are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppers.com.au.
