Homeless concern

SEAHOLME residents have raised concerns about the number of people using the Seaholme Park as a place to sleep at night.
The park, which is located on Beach St, is home to a playground, a toilet block and according to residents, campers and homeless people.
One resident who did not want to be named told Star there could be up to five cars a night parked at the park with people sleeping in them.
“We have a white van that comes regularly – he appears to live at the park,” the resident said.
“A tradesman who lives in his car with his dog and girlfriend also parks there.”
The resident said he understands the people are probably doing it tough but he had concerns for the neighbourhood. “We have had tents – they don’t bother us as much because they’re probably genuine tourists who will move on.
“But it’s not a campsite – but there are no signs to say camping is not allowed.” The resident said some of the squatters even fail to use the public toilet and instead choose to relieve themselves by a tree. We can see them through our window. “Children could be playing down there.”
The resident said he has called the council and the police on numerous occasions but to no avail.
Star contacted Hobsons Bay City Council, but they denied any complaints had been received.
“That is rubbish,” the resident said.
“I called the front desk quite a few times and I’ve spoke to the bylaws department.
Hobsons Bay Director Business and Finance Glenn O’Sullivan said although sleeping in a public park or car is not illegal, camping is.
“Regularly sleeping in a public park or car could be construed as camping and infringement notices may be issued,” he said.
“Public urination should be reported to the police.”
