ST ALBANS Spurs continued their unbeaten start to the Victorian Women’s Football League season with a big win over Scoresby at Kings Park Reserve on Sunday.
The seniors romped to a 29.21 (195) to 1.0 (6) victory. Earlier in the evening, the reserves won a hard-fought contest over Sunbury 10.5 (65) to 3.7 (25).
It was clear early in the match that it was going to be a one-sided seniors game with the Spurs kicking 10 unanswered goals in the first quarter.
There was a gulf between the two sides in experience and class.
Scoresby must be given credit for trying to push on and scoring a goal in the third quarter (through Sylvana Kusanke).
But they met a powerful and experienced side in the Spurs, who were led by Amy Catterall (five goals) and Jen Plumb (four) in the forward line, and Lauren Bazeley in the ruck.
Shannon McFerran continued her remarkable return to football in the midfield.
The game also gave coaches the opportunity to trial players in different positions. The changes took effect in the last stanza, when defender Sam Johnson went forward and scored two goals.
The St Albans senior team will look to continue their run after the Easter break against reigning champions Darebin. Earlier in the evening, the Spurs reserves side took on reserves division newcomers Sunbury Lions.
The game mixed contrasting styles with Sunbury’s skilful, physical and aggressive style against St Albans’ fast-paced game.
After a tight first quarter, the intensity lifted, with the game becoming more heated and feisty in the second quarter.
St Albans had an 11-point lead at the main break.
St Albans was led by Hayley Sanders, who kicked three goals in the third, Moe Hope (four goals on debut) and skipper Joanne Constantino, who took the coach’s instructions to the letter as they busted out of the blocks to double their half-time score.
The Spurs took what was an unassailable 29 point-lead at three-quarter time.
The Spurs ran out 40-point winners.
