THE Altona City Theatre is bringing the glitz to the stage next month with their next production, The Boy from Oz, in celebration of the theatre’s 40th birthday.
The musical celebrates the life of the late iconic Australian entertainer Peter Allen, featuring the classic hits I Go To Rio, I Still Call Australia Home and Tenterfield Saddler, along with the portrayal of fellow icons Judy Garland and Liza Minelli, who Allen was married to for seven years.
The introduction of the show, which opens on 6 July and plays until 28 July, will also follow the 20th anniversary of Peter Allen’s death.
David Postill, who plays Allen, said it was incredible to be given the chance to play the icon.
“There’s no other role like it in theatre,” he said.
“It is exhausting, I only have six and a half minutes off stage during the whole show which is quite a feat. It’s the biggest thing I’ve ever taken on but one of the most fun.”
The Boy from Oz is the Geelong native’s third show with the Altona City Theatre, after previously performing in Beauty and the Beast and producing Aladdin.
The show’s producer Elise Elmer, who has been involved with a number of the Altona City Theatre’s productions, said she couldn’t wait for the show to begin.
“This is such a great show in itself, it’s so well written with great music and a great cast,” she said.
“Rehearsals are coming together really well and we’re really excited about it.”
Tickets are $30 for adults, $27 concession or $25 each for groups of 10 or more and tickets can be purchased online at www.altonacitytheatre.com.au or by calling 0425 705 550.
