FOUR Melbourne Victory players gave budding soccer stars in Altona a treat last week, when they attended the School Sport Victoria ME Bank division football championships.
Danny Allsopp, who has played 116 A-League games for Victory including games for the Socceroos, and Sam Gallagher, who is a member of the Young Socceroos and played in the 2011 under 20 World Cup, as well as Jimmy Jeggo and Julius Davies were the four players participating.
The competition, which was held at Kim Reserve, allowed Year 8 boys and girls from Williamstown High School, Bayside College Altona, Bayside College Williamstown, Altona Secondary College, Point Cook College, Caranballac College Laverton Secondary College and Laverton P-12 College, to gain first hand tips and advice from their soccer heroes.
The visit was a thrill for many of the students, many of whom are avid A-League fans.
After a day of fierce but fair competition, Laverton P-12 College was declared the winner after a penalty shootout in the boys’ championship and Williamstown High School won the girls’ competition. Both teams will advance to the Western Region Finals to be held next month.
The competition is part of School Sport Victoria’s winter program where up to 2300 schools compete across the state in soccer, netball, Australian football, tee-ball, badminton and hockey.
