A HUGE blast in Tullamarine was extinguished with fire retardant last week after 50 MFB, CFA and Tullamarine Airport Fire Service crews battled for five hours to bring it under control with no success.
Metropolitan Fire Brigade Crews and Country Fire Authority crews were called out to the scene on Assembly Drive in the early hours of Thursday morning and were able to contain the fire to three small factories.
Residents within a 3km radius of the area were advised to stay inside, close their windows and doors and shut off any air conditioning.
The fire was deemed in control five hours later.
“This was a difficult fire to manage due to its size and the issues posed by the condition of the building,” Deputy Chief Fire Officer David Youssef said.
“Firefighter safety is obviously paramount and the decision to review the tactics and attack the fire with foam was best practice.
“The public were kept informed and up to date via the MFB website and with the help of all media.
“We will be investigating to determine the cause of the fire and engineers will determine the damage which will be extensive.”
