Fence battle for safety won

PETITIONERS have won a battle to improve the safety of a playground with the erection of a new fence.
During its ordinary meeting last week, Hobsons Bay City Council allocated $95,000 in the 2013-14 capital works program to install a fence around G Den Dulk Reserve, Altona.
The council received a petition with 63 signatories requesting a fence be installed to improve the safety of the playground users.
The petition asked the council to improve the safety on the corner of Somers Parade, Seagull Ave and Blyth St by providing a fence to prevent children from running onto oncoming traffic.
“This playground is surrounded by roads on three sides, and is located in the middle of a busy bus terminal, shopping strip and kindergarten, thus raising the risk of children running onto oncoming traffic,” the petition said.
According to the council report, the installation of a reserve perimeter fence has been identified as a “priority”.
