Spanner in roundabout works

BRIMBANK City Council has proposed installing a roundabout in a Taylors Lakes street to help combat speedsters and improve road safety, but a petition has been lodged against the idea.
A council report into the issue said a petition with 22 signatures was received in September this year, objecting to a proposal to build a roundabout at the intersection of Lady Nelson Way and Lipton St.
The speed limit along Lady Nelson Way is 50km, but after concerns were raised about vehicles speeding between Copernicus Way and Proctor Crescent’s western end, the council began monitoring traffic in the area.
The survey found 85 per cent of vehicles travelled along the road at speeds of up to 60km, with more than 2700 vehicles per day entering the location.
The council proposed the roundabout to combat speeding, after installing a variety of traffic calming devices along the collector road section of Lady Nelson Way in the past including other roundabouts, kerb outstands and linemarking treatments.
However, when the council alerted nearby homes about plans to build the $180,000 roundabout, the petition was lodged.
Last Tuesday, the council’s administrators voted to undertake a further survey of property owners and residents between Copernicus Way and Proctor Crescent (western end) “to determine the level of support for the roundabout”.
As a result, if there is “majority community support” for the roundabout, the council will refer the project for consideration to future capital works budgets.
