DAREBIN Council has followed in the footsteps of Hobsons Bay by establishing a GLBTIQ (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer) Advisory Committee.
Last year Hobsons Bay became the first council in Melbourne to establish the committee making Darebin the second.
“I congratulate the City of Darebin for establishing a GLBTIQ Advisory Group and encourage other councils to consider following suit,” Hobsons Bay Mayor and chair of Hobsons Bay’s GLBTIQ Advisory Committee, Tony Briffa said.
“It is wonderful to see councils supporting all sections of our diverse community.”
Darebin Councillor Trent McCarthy said Darebin council is keen to develop and help realise equality for residents from GLBTIQ communities.
“Community understanding about sexual and gender diversity is a significant issue for many people in Darebin, particularly young people,” Cr McCarthy said.
“Council has big plans ahead this year to progress our work in recognising and celebrating Darebin’s diversity.”
