AT the age of seven, Jessica Moro went to her first taekwondo lesson.
Within four years she was sporting a black belt and now at the age of 21 she is taking on the world. Last month, Moro returned home to St Albans after competing at the 2012 USA Open where she won a gold medal in the team event and was a finalist in individual competition.
This latest accolade will sit nicely in a trophy cabinet that already boasts a bronze medal at the 2010 Korean WTF culture expo and bronze and silver medals at the USA 2011 Open.
The four time Australian Champion has made her name in the Poomsae event which she hopes will one day be added to the Olympics.
“To learn the patterns isn’t hard but to perfect it in all the different aspects for the competition is pretty difficult. You need to know the technical part of it with accuracy and stuff like that as well as a presentation side of it. I need to try and convey power in the right way,” Moro said.
“At the moment I am training six days a week for four hours per day with a lot of strength training as well as technical training.”
As well as competing all around the world, Moro is also passing on her expertise to the next generation of taekwondo stars. She is an instructor at the Taekwondo Plus Training Centre where her students have been achieving outstanding results.
Between training and coaching, it is surprising Moro has any spare time on her hands but she is also undertaking a sports science degree at RMIT University.
Being a student and training, Moro would appreciate help from businesses in the community which would like to sponsor her as she continues to take the taekwondo world by storm. Potential sponsors can contact the Taekwondo Plus Training Centre on 0403 011 525.
Next on Moro’s hit list will be the World Championships where she is already targeting a gold medal.
