A CAROLINE Springs resident continues to look to her past to find inspiration for her artwork.
In her latest exhibition Audrey Buttigieg-Cardona, who was born in Malta, has created delicate drawings and paintings of the eye which many people in her native country believe ward of evil spirits.
Audrey said she enjoyed exploring the capacity of eyes to express intense emotion such as anxiety, anger and calm. She said other themes in the latest exhibition, which will be hosted by the Hunt Club in Deer Park, include camouflage, mystical beauty and the catharsis through art.
“I have continued to explore the eye image in my drawings and the use of butterflies,” Audrey said.
“However, they are not the only themes that will be exhibited at this exhibition. My artworks have evolved from just a decorative line drawing into more personal issues.”
Like many artists, the school teacher has put her life on canvas and has drawn from her own emotions to create lasting pieces.
“Last year, I was going through a tough period in my life of infertility where I was descending into depression.
“I had to get out of it and one of the main things that helped me resurface triumphantly was expressing my anger, disappointment and depressive mood on paper.
“A lot of women will relate to these drawings as they undergo a similar situation.
“Luckily, I’m out of the woods and the future is looking brighter than ever. I hope that these works will help other women to speak about their problems and to find the courage to move on.”
Audrey’s one-woman show will feature at the Hunt Club in April.
