HOBSONS Bay City Council has decided unanimously to implement the name change of the Cole St Reserve in Laverton to Dick Murdoch Reserve.
In 2012, the council got a request from a local resident seeking its endorsement of a proposal to change the name of the reserve.
The initiative was proposed in recognition of the contribution that former Altona and Hobsons Bay councillor Dick Murdoch made to the establishment.
Cr Colleen Gates said the former councillor was instrumental in initiating and following through with the changes of the reserve.
Ms Gates said he also invigorated Laverton as a suburb and engaged youth in the area.
Mr Murdoch championed improvements to Cole St Reserve, including replacement of old fencing, establishment of new grasses areas, installation of new children’s play equipment and floodlighting.
Cr Luba Grigorovich said he also championed programs throughout the entire municipality.
The programs include the mayor’s art program, annual garden awards and re-introduction of the junior council program.
Cr Tony Briffa said Mr Murdoch served the community extremely well not only in council chambers but as part of various community groups.
“(He) really is a genuine community-minded person, who tells it as it is, will do whatever he can for you, only fitting that we name this reserve after him,” Cr Briffa said.
A naming ceremony will take place at a later date.
