JAMES and Lorna Cran deliver more than just a hot meal, they provide a source of care in the community.
As Meals on Wheels volunteers for more than a decade they help keep the elderly connected to the community.
Two days a week every week for the past 16 years they have delivered meals and assisted the elderly and those with disabilities to remain living independently for as long as possible.
Lorna said they wanted to do their bit to give back to their community and when a friend suggested Meals on Wheels they gave it a go and have enjoyed it ever since.
She said she understands why many people involved with the organisation see Meals on Wheels as more than just a meal delivery service.
“A lot of people we go to see don’t see anyone else from one end of the day to the other, when we pop in it is someone for them to talk to,” she said.
Most importantly she and James value the purpose and human connection with the clients.
“It’s nice for someone to come along and say hello.”
This August the Crans will be among hundreds of volunteers Australia-wide to be celebrated as part of the organisation’s 60 year inception.
To celebrate, every Meals on Wheels client across Australia will receive a commemorative placemat with their meal delivery.
She said the couple do not see Meals on Wheels as one-sided relationship with both volunteer and client mutually benefitting from each exchange.
“You go around make people happy and they make you happy.”
She said they will continue to deliver meals to assist people in their community for as long as they are able to.
