Council probe widens

MELTON City Council mayor Kathy Majdlik may not be the only councillor to come under fire after last year’s bitterly fought council elections.
Star can now reveal the Local Government Investigations and Compliance Inspectorate has received multiple complaints regarding the mayor while other councillors have not been spared.
“The inspectorate has received several complaints about Cr Kathy Majdlik and has also received a complaint regarding a number of other councillors,” a spokesperson for the Local Government Investigations and Compliance Inspectorate said.
This latest revelation comes less than a month after media reports suggested the mayor is the subject of an investigation by the Local Government Inspectorate and is facing allegations that she offered financial rewards for preferences during last year’s election campaign.
In what has been a tumultuous month for the besieged council, calls for Cr Majdlik to stand down have been ignored and now it seems other councillors may be facing an uncertain future.
Meanwhile, the council will introduce a new meeting procedure local law at next week’s council meeting in a bid to combat the unruly behaviour from certain sections of the gallery.
Last month’s meeting was adjourned even before public question time had commenced, with police called in to calm angry members of the gallery. The meeting was eventually suspended.
Acting chief executive officer Maurie Heaney told Star the council aimed to always have a calm meeting, so it can conduct its functions including making decisions in a conducive manner.
Mr Heaney said community members who came along could follow these proceedings and could have their questions read out and responded to in the public question time.
“Council has been reviewing conduct of the gallery and the difficulties council has had in trying to conducts its business. A new meeting procedure local law will come into effect from the next council meeting and council is investigating all legal remedies available to try to return some normality to future meetings,” Mr Heaney said.
