STAFF at Sunshine Hospital have always understood the importance of allowing parents to grieve for their lost babies.
That is why 10 years ago a small group of nurses convened a group to improve the services available to families who were experiencing the tragic loss of their child, both pre and post 20 weeks’ gestation.
A memorial book aimed at creating meaningful memories for families and friends and a rose garden were established and now, a decade later, a memorial plaque has been unveiled.
Clinical midwife consultant Yasna Blandin de Chalain said the group continues to meet and holds regular memorial services, with special items including photos, footprints and clothes provided to parents as keepsakes and remembrances of their babies.
Ms Blandin de Chalain said the work of staff offers a very tangible gesture to the parents and extended family.
“We acknowledge that the experience of a perinatal loss is a very difficult time for parents and extended family. Providing the emotional space for grieving is an important step towards integrating the loss,” she said.
“Through the efforts of a united staff approach, we aim to acknowledge this loss in a sensitive and culturally appropriate way. The legacy of the work that was started by this small group 10 years ago continues.”
