HOBSONS Bay City Council has prosecuted two people in the Sunshine Magistrates’ Court for demolishing heritage assets.
Williamstown Ward Cr Angela Altair said the council took heritage assets seriously.
“The council would much rather educate and assist than fine and prosecute,” she said.
“The council also has a heritage consultant who can provide expert advice on developing heritage buildings.
“I would also encourage the community to report any illegal works they witness in heritage areas to the council.
“It is a shame when heritage characteristics of buildings are needlessly knocked down but what is not always realised is the energy that is then spent by those people in restoring the damage.”
Cr Tony Briffa said both matters, which were heard on Friday 2 December, were a reminder that heritage assets are deeply valued.
“In these instances, both defendants were ordered to pay a fine and reinstate the chimneys,” he said.
