Shorten in for the long haul

MARIBRYNONG MP Bill Shorten was among the winners in the Gillard Government’s reshuffle last week.
Mr Shorten was elevated to Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations and holds on to his portfolio of Financial Services and Superannuation, as well as the title of Assistant Treasurer.
While he admitted it was a big portfolio, Mr Shorten said he felt “privileged” to be given the titles.
The former Australian Workers’ Union National Secretary, said workplace relations was an issue that had been “close to (his) heart for a long time”.
First elected to the seat of Maribrynong in 2007, he has risen quickly through Labor ranks. But Mr Shorten reassured Maribrynong voters the promotion wouldn’t lessen his passion for issues back home.
“This is where I live and where I will always be proud to call my home,” Mr Shorten said.
“I will be just as dedicated to working for you on the local issues as I was before my new appointment.
“Hard work locally never diminishes, and I want everyone to know that I am still here to help.”
His colleague in the West, Gellibrand MP Nicola Roxon was also a winner in the reshuffle, becoming the first female Attorney-General in 111 years of Australian Parliament.
Ms Roxon has held the seat of Gellibrand since 1998 and has been Health Minister since December 2007.
