WILLIAMSTOWN’S latest tourist attraction hung in the balance last Friday at Gem Pier, as onlookers snapped priceless photos and boats detoured for a closer glimpse.
But don’t worry, the lead-footed Mazda driver escaped unscathed after he confused the accelerator and brake pedals just before midday.
The unlucky driver, who works as a volunteer for the navy’s ship HMAS Castlemaine, had just finished a shift and was trying to turn the car around.
“Apparently he was a bit shaken,” said Parks Victoria spokesman Jarred Parsons.
“They had to leave the car for a little, while the insurance company stayed to assess the damage.”
The pier was not damaged, but it is believed the man’s pride copped a beating.
