Spruce-up for freeway

A LOBBY group has succeeded in getting the State and Federal Governments to spend money repairing freeway verges, noisewalls and gateways along the Princes Freeway near Laverton.
The two Governments announced they will spend a total of $681,000 on landscaping works that will beautify freeway intersections at Newland and High streets, as well as Aviation Rd.
The Road-Rail Environment Action (RREACT) group, made up of local residents and businesses, has lobbied hard for the upgrades for more than a year.
RREACT’s chairman, John Forrester, said members were pleased by the rapid action of both levels of government.
“We didn’t expect miracles overnight, but this doesn’t mean our work is over,” he said. The group would like better freeway landscaping from Laverton to Wyndham in a future phase.
Roads Minister Tim Pallas said the freeway was one of the country’s most important freight and tourist roads.
“This joint funding will make the journey along the freeway a much more pleasant experience, with native shrubs and plants giving the area a much needed ‘spruce-up’,” he said.
