SCIENCEWORKS’ new manager has some big plans for the interactive museum – and as one of the world’s leading curators of human biology and medicine she’s certainly up for the challenge.
Dr Nurin Veis’s appointment as manager of the museum has heralded the beginning of an exciting era for Scienceworks, and she’s dreaming big.
“I’d like to set Scienceworks up as being the science cultural central of the west,” Dr Veis said.
Dr Veis had an illustrious career at Museum Victoria where she developed exhibitions including The Human Body and The Mind: Enter the Labyrinth.
The award-winning exhibition set an international benchmark for exhibitions based on sensory and exploratory experiences.
Dr Veis admits she is a very good storyteller, and wants the exhibitions inside the 21-year-old site to reflect this and to enthral, educate, inspire and amaze.
“People are very intrigued by the world of science but they find it kind of an impenetrable world.”
“I want people of all ages to be inspired by science – that’s where my motivation comes from.
I want to be able to open people’s eyes to something new, to something challenging, or to something they haven’t been able to access before.”
Dr Veis said she wanted the museum to be seen as an excellent centre for education and a place that cherished and nurtured the thought of creation and innovation. She also hoped to make new friendships and network with local communities and wider organisations.
“We also want to be seen as very creative in our storytelling and very dynamic and really pushing the boundaries and being a technologically advanced place.”
“We need to create immersive, contemporary experiences that draw people to Scienceworks not simply as a science museum, but as the science cultural centre of the West.”
