WYNDHAM Council is encouraging residents to join a campaign and make a pledge to help eliminate violence against women, by taking part in White Ribbon Day.

As part of White Ribbon Day, which is on Sunday 25 November 2012, Wyndham Council is hosting a free community lunch.

White Ribbon Day Ambassador, Cr Shane Bourke, said the lunch was one of the ways Wyndham City was showing its support for the campaign.

“Wyndham City will also be creating awareness of violence against women by branding some of our trucks with White Ribbon Day images,” Cr Bourke said.

“Statistics show that one in three Australian women over the age of 15 have reported experiencing physical or sexual violence at some time in their lives, making White Ribbon Day a significant national campaign. It calls upon men to make a difference by swearing an oath never to commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women.”

Cr Bourke said the community needed to unite to put an end to violence against women.

“By working together as a community to address this issue, Wyndham City has already achieved a great deal, including a dedicated Family Violence Unit at Werribee Police Station and the introduction of a specialist family violence service at Werribee Magistrates’ Court,” he said.

“By making a stand together, we can achieve much more and work towards eliminating violence against women altogether.”

The free community White Ribbon Day lunch is on Thursday 29 November from midday at the Wayapeeri House, 106 Duncans Road Werribee. For more information, contact the council’s Health Project Officer on 9742 1817.
