RUTH Gatt knows that a simple smile and a quick chat can brighten someone’s day.
That’s why the generous St Albans resident gives up her time each Monday to visit and converse with patients at Sunshine Hospital.
Mrs Gatt volunteers hours of her time to simply speak to patients in the rehabilitation and post-operative wards.
“Some people don’t have many visitors,” she said.
“It’s nice for them to see a familiar face and I can offer them some comfort.”
She began volunteering at the hospital two months ago and has already made close bonds with some of the long- term patients.
“There are a handful of patients that I see on a regular basis, and they have become like friends.”
The mother of three has her hands full with work four days a week, running a household and spending time with her three daughters, but is still prepared to give up her one day off to bring a smile to someone who needs it.
“I always knew that when my girls got older I wanted to try to give back something to the community. If I can help I will.”
Mrs Gatt encouraged other Brimbank residents to volunteer their time, particularly around the festive season when many people are not lucky enough to be surrounded by family and friends.
