Heat is on for green savings

SCHOOLS in Brimbank and Melton are going solar.
Gorton MP Brendan O’Connor last week announced four local schools had won grants of up to $50,000 to install solar panels, rainwater tanks and other renewable power systems, as part of the Federal Government’s National Solar Schools Program.
Cairnlea Park Primary School received $50,000, while Taylors Lakes Secondary College, Marian College and Gilson College also received funding.
More than 2600 schools across Australia have already won grants under the scheme.
The latest round in funding was announced by Minister for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency on 15 December, with 1226 schools sharing in a $51 million windfall.
Applications were assessed using on merit, meaning schools had to demonstrate value for money, as well as environmental and educational benefits. Applicants who were not successful in this round will be eligible to re-apply in future rounds.
