Keep Clear sign anger

A VICROADS decision to remove Keep Clear markings from the Brooklyn end of Millers Rd has outraged residents and Hobsons Bay councillors.
Deputy Mayor Tony Briffa told council he was very disappointed by the VicRoads decision.
“I note that there is a Keep Clear area outside the Melbourne Water establishment around the same precinct on Millers Rd. So when it is a Victorian State Government facility they found that it’s obviously warranted a Keep Clear sign – but when it comes to our residents in Brooklyn they don’t,” he said at a council meeting.
“I just don’t think that’s good enough and that’s something we’ll have to take further.”
VicRoads Acting Regional Director, Metropolitan North West Patricia Liew told Star when the road was resurfaced, VicRoads found that the traffic counts did not warrant a Keep Clear zone at these sites under the guidelines.
“The Keep Clear zones further down Millers Rd were assessed as meeting the guidelines,” Ms Liew said.
VicRoads will discuss this issue further with the council and local residents.
Cr Briffa described VicRoads’ response as “nonsense”.
“It seems highly unlikely to me that within half a kilometre on the same stretch of road the traffic counts justify a Keep Clear zone outside a Melbourne Water facility and a car wash, but not the residential streets,” he said.
Cr Briffa told Star the removal of the Keep Clear road markings had made access to Millers Rd more difficult and unsafe for Brooklyn residents.
