BUDDING b-boys and b-girls will show off their latest moves when a new hip-hop dance school opens its doors in Sydenham.
The Empire of Dance will start up its new hip hop dance school ‘Battle Factor’ in Brimbank next month to encourage children and young adults to get their groove on and learn more about hip hop culture.
Director and founder Kylie Grech has more than 25 years’ experience performing on stage and creating hip-hop choreography.
Ms Grech said she decided to start up the new dance school in Sydenham to give all students an opportunity to shine in their talent and believes deeply that through dance everyone can have a great time.
Hip hop teacher Liela, who started dancing at 16 years old, said the school will give kids the chance to get moving, gain confidence and make new friends.
“What I try to do is get the new generation involved and get them involved in dance rather than other things they could be getting involved with on the streets,” she said.
“I’d love to see their passion because a lot of kids are shy and don’t think they are good enough but I’d love to promote that if you don’t give it a go, you’re never gonna know.”
Liela said dancers will have to learn a routine and audition to be part of a hip-hop crew which will take part in competitions throughout the year.
“We pretty much try to come up with routines that the kids can pull off and compete with,” Liela said.
“We teach them crew life, what it’s all about and it’s pretty much getting them ready for competitions.”
Liela said she has always been a passionate hip-hop dancer who hopes to teach her moves to the next generation of young b-boys and girls.
“Wherever the kids are, whoever wants to learn, I’ll be there. If you are willing to learn and really want this, then it’s not a problem.”
