Old tree gets the chop

By VANESSA VALENZUELA

THE Regional Rail Link Authority (RRLA) has promised to work with community groups after residents raised concerns about the removal of trees in Sunshine.

RRLA spokesperson Tim Holmes told Star the project team recognised the importance of local community amenities and would make every effort to avoid the removal of significant vegetation.

“In this instance a tree near Barclay Reserve which is listed on Brimbank City Council’s significant tree register is required to be removed as part of the power relocation works in the area,” he said.

“The project team has been working together with the power authority and Brimbank City Council for several months on the design for the power relocation works at that location.”

Mr Holmes said a number of different options have been explored with a view to retain the tree however a number of constraints had made its removal unavoidable.

“The Footscray – Deer Park project team is working with key stakeholders on landscaping plans for the project and are also looking at a variety of options for reuse of timber from the tree,” Mr Holmes said.

He said a meeting has also been arranged with local community groups such as the Friends of HV McKay Gardens and the Sunshine Historical Society to discuss the issue in greater detail.

Brimbank Council’s General Manager of Infrastructure and Environment Paul Younis said council is committed to conserving important local heritage places.

Mr Younis said council has worked closely with Regional Rail Link to minimise impacts on local heritage values at the HV McKay gardens.

“Unfortunately however, a tree with local heritage significance, along the verge of Talmage St, needs to be removed to facilitate large service relocation works associated with the Anderson Rd Grade separation.”

“Council has approved removal of the tree, on the condition that compensation, which considers the aesthetic and heritage values of the tree, is provided. The compensation will be used to fund additional tree planting and management in the area.”

As part of the Regional Rail Link works in Sunshine, residents should expect night time disruptions from January 15.

Loud noise and extra lighting will be created by Anderson Rd grade-separation works and night works will also take place at the intersection of Sunshine Rd and Ashley St on 6 February.
