MANNY Muscat has played just three seasons in the A-League, but he has already established himself as a key piece in the Wellington Phoenix jigsaw puzzle.
The former Sunshine George Cross and Green Gully player claimed two awards, the Players’ Player of the Year and Members’ Player of the Year, at Wellington’s presentation night.
Muscat, 26, also finished second in the Player of the Year award.
The defensive midfielder was initially signed on a short-term contract at Phoenix as an injury replacement in 2008.
Now, after 68 games in Australia’s top competition, he is a household name.
“I was quite happy with the season right through from the start,” Muscat, who grew up in Burnside Heights, told Star.
“I’ve been consistent and, like I’ve been telling everyone, once you find your feet in the league, it’s a matter of just improving each year, and that’s what I’ve been doing.
“Obviously it’s good to know that you’ve been voted by your colleagues (to win Players’ Player of the Year).
“It’s quite thrilling considering all the players we’ve had. We’ve had some Socceroos in our squad and it’s good to be among the players who have been playing professional football for a while.”
Muscat has also represented fledgling football nation Malta eight times and has taken to the field against power teams such as Portugal, Czech Republic and Switzerland.
Not surprisingly, he said competing on the world stage was an eye-opening experience.
“Playing for your country is quite an achievement, but playing against world-class players is a different story. The calibre of those types of players is unbelievable and it’s a big step up.”
Muscat also remembers his time with Sunshine George Cross (2004-2007) and Green Gully (2007-2008) in the Victorian Premier League fondly.
His talent was identified early and he was made captain of George Cross at just 19.
Muscat notched 48 appearances for Sunshine and 42 for the Cavaliers.
“You never forget where you started off and your grassroots. I’ve had successful years at both clubs and I really enjoyed both clubs.”
Muscat credited his father, Frank, former Georgies boss Chris Taylor and Green Gully technical director and former coach Ian Dobson, citing their positive influence.
“They’re three personnel who helped me to get where I am now,” he said.
Muscat’s current contract with Phoenix ends at the conclusion of next season.
One gets the feeling an extension is inevitable.
