A SEVERELY injured pacific black duck was found wandering the streets of Newport, triggering warnings about keeping native animals.
Hobsons Bay City Council mayor Leigh Hardinge said it was illegal to possess wild animals without permits.
Council officers suspect the duck was taken from Newport Lakes as a chick and raised as a pet and will not recuperate enough to be released back into the wild.
Its feathers had been clipped on one wing to prevent it escaping but the clipping was so severe it had led to bleeding and infection.
