Mate’s car seized

By VANESSA CHIRCOP
A ST Albans man has had a mate’s car impounded last week after being caught driving more than 40 kilometres over the speed limit in Altona.
Hobsons Bay Highway Patrol intercepted the Mitsubishi sedan travelling at 109 kilometres per hour on Millers Rd, Altona.
Police allege the 19-year-old driver was borrowing his friend’s car at the time. The car was impounded for 30 days under Victoria’s hoon laws.
The teenager is expected to be charged on summons with speeding and dangerous driving and will now have to pay $637 to have his friend’s car returned on the 14 June.
Hobsons Bay Inspector Bill Mathers said the young age, inexperience and risk-taking of the driver were all concerns and are often factors that contribute to accidents.
He has urged anyone with information or witnesses any dangerous driving to immediately call Triple-zero.
For traffic matters call the Hoon Line at Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Meanwhile, Williamstown Police have been cracking down on mobile phone usage while driving.
Last Tuesday police conducted a traffic operation focusing on drivers using mobile phones, seat belt offences and speeding.
The operation, conducted on Kororoit Creek Rd Altona, nabbed 24 offenders. Eleven people were caught using mobile phones, seven for failing to wear a seatbelt, four for speeding and two for other traffic offences.
