Bats fail to fire

ST ANTHONY’S remains perched on the bottom of the McIntyre Cup table in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association after suffering its third loss of the summer on Saturday.
After choosing to bat first on its home deck at Melton Recreation Reserve against Romsey, the St Anthony’s top order couldn’t fire, with Darren McRae, Rod Oosterhoff and Brad Stilsby all sent packing early in the piece for a combined four runs.
Cameron Lewis was then bowled for a duck to leave the hosts stranded at 4/13, but the fifth wicket proved much harder to come by for Romsey.
St Anthony’s rallied through the help of Jeremy Hibbert and Michael Yates, who scored 35 and 15 respectively to lift their side to 50 by the time they were broken up.
However, with little help from the rest of the order, St Anthony’s sunk for a total of 73 from just 20 overs in the middle.
Romsey then went on to make light work of their run chase, getting the job done for the loss of just four wickets by the end of the 23rd over.
All four of St Anthony’s wickets came via Warren Haffenden, who managed to snare figures of 4/19 and two maidens from his eight overs in the middle.
Jeff Evans, while wicketless, proved to be quite economical, giving away just six runs in his three overs.
St Anthony’s will again have its work cut out for it this weekend when it takes on Sunbury on the road in another one-day game at Clarke Oval.
