Students find a way with words

STUDENTS have blitzed a local writing competition with 111 entries across Hobsons Bay.
Keen students spent their summer holidays writing poetry and short stories for the eighth annual Friends of Williamstown and Newport Summer Writing Competition.
More than 200 people were expected to attend Monday night’s award ceremony at Williamstown Town Hall, where Hobsons Bay local and acclaimed author Andy Griffiths was making a guest appearance.
Competition judge Jen White said the quality of writing was improving annually. “There are some incredibly talented young writers out there,” she said.
Poetry and short story entries had a first place, highly commended and encouragement award within a chosen age level.
First place received a cash prize, from $20 for the youngest students to $80 for Year 10-12 students, and the encouragement award was a book voucher.
The students who received first prize for their short stories were Freya Alexander, Year 10-12, Rachel Tobin, Year 7-9, Alex Ritchie, Grade 4-6, and Matthew Lloyd for the Prep-Grade 3 category.
The students who received first prize in the poetry competition were Jessica Wiggan, Year 10-12, Alice Leckie, Year 7-9, Jack Hall, Grade 4-6, and Samuel Willmore in the Prep–Grade 3 category.
