MORE than 500 dancers from across Melbourne are expected to converge on Werribee this week as a new dancing competition is launched for the first time.
The Australian Dance Competition will be the first to bring dancers and industry experts from almost every style of dancing held in Wyndham.
Event organiser Tanya Nikolic, from Altona Meadows, said the competition would see the best dancers in hip hop, jazz, classical, tap and other kinds of dancing compete against each other.
“The difference between this and other dancing competitions is that at other events there is one or two judges overseeing the whole event, but we will have two different judges for every section,” Ms Nikolic said.
“They will only be judging the section that they are trained in and they are all people who are currently in the industry and know what’s happening now.”
Ms Nikolic, who runs Bodylicious Fitness in Laverton, said she was excited to see what different dancers would bring to the competition and eventually she would like to see it become an Australia-wide event.
“I took part in a lot of dance competitions when I was young so it’s good to be behind the scenes now and see other young dancers come through,” she said.
“Instead of being scared and doing things that are outside the square we want to encourage people to do that and to be brave.”
The Australian Dance Competition will be held on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 April at the Wyndham Cultural Centre at 177 Watton St in Werribee.
Entry is free to spectators.
