BOOZE Bus operations will increase in Hobsons Bay after a number of people were caught for drink driving during a recent blitz in the area.
Police set up a Booze Bus last Thursday evening along Millers Rd near the Westgate Freeway.
Within 10 minutes a 49-year-old P-plater from Altona North recorded a blood alcohol reading of .033 per cent, where he has a .02 limit. He was issued an infringement notice.
Three other drivers were nabbed in the first hour.
Sergeant Graeme Couch from the Hobsons Bay Highway Patrol said people were still not getting the message.
“If you drink and drive, take drugs and drive or drive in a dangerous, unacceptable anti-social manner, the chances of you getting caught have never been higher.”
Some 384 drivers were tested for the presence of alcohol, with three over the prescribed limit and two testing positive for drugs.
Among the drivers caught was a 31-year-old Yarraville man who tested positive for cannabis. He was fined $433 and had his licence suspended for three months.
But what alarmed police more was his two-year-old daughter was in the car.
Police said they were “gobsmacked” at the result.
“It is clear that people are still not getting the message and taking unnecessary risks,” Sgt Couch said.
“Not only do they risk themselves and other road users lives, drivers need to take ownership of their own responsibility and starting thinking of the long term.”
Sgt Couch said he has ordered increase in Booze Bus operations to the Hobsons Bay area.
