IN the Western Region Football League, Sunshine’s top four hopes seem all but secure after an impressive 18-point win against Hoppers Crossing. In what were tough conditions throughout the match, the Kangaroos were dominant when the contest was up for grabs and took a nine-point lead into quarter time.
A further seven goals-to-four in the next two quarters saw the margin balloon out to five goals at the last change.
Despite winning the final quarter, there was no miraculous comeback from the Warriors, as they slumped to another disappointing defeat.
Patrick Wiggins produced another solid performance for the Kangaroos, booting three goals while fellow forward Tom Millar finished the match with two.
Wiggins has now kicked 52 goals from nine matches this season.
For Hoppers Crossing, Brydon Coles kicked three goals while Matthew Smith was named the Warriors’ best player.
The 11.14 (80) to 9.8 (62) result sees Sunshine remain in fourth spot on the WRFL division one ladder.
The Kangaroos have now opened up a three game break between themselves and fifth placed St Albans.
For Hoppers Crossing, the club now faces an uphill battle to make finals with the Warriors dropping to sixth place on the ladder, one game and six percentage points behind the Saints.
With just four weeks left in the WRFL season, Hoppers Crossing has no margin for error in the run home with matches to come against Altona, Albion, North Footscray and Deer Park.
IN other division one results, St Albans handled the tough conditions better than Yarraville-Seddon, securing a 35-point win.
There was nothing separating the two teams throughout the first three quarters with the margin just 11 points going into the final change.
However, the Saints were able to show their class in the final term, kicking four goals-to-none to seal the 9.9 (63) to 4.4 (28) win.
In what will be a blockbuster clash this weekend, St Albans will do battle with Sunshine.
