Melton sees future in perfect Storm

THE kids of Melton flocked to Blackwood Drive Recreation Reserve last Thursday to take part in a Melbourne Storm Rugby League Clinic.
The energetic group of youngsters could soon find themselves part of an actual rugby league team.
National Rugby League development officer Ryan Walker said the Victorian Rugby League was looking to start a new club in Melton at some point.
“The VRL are looking for community support for a potential club,” Mr Walker said.
Mr Walker said a group of volunteers from the community would be needed to kick things off.
“Clubs need to be based on volunteers and support from the community,” Mr Walker said.
Sponsors, committee members and coaches were part of the team of volunteers needed to start what would be Melton’s first rugby league club.
Last year’s July school holiday program saw up to 70 children take part in the clinic, which involved a rotation of stations where kids learnt key rugby skills like learning to pass, kick, tackle and score.
And this year was much the same.
“It’s all based on fun and getting everyone involved, both boys and girls,” Mr Walker said.
“It’s a great team sport where the kids can enjoy learning skills and different skills that they might not be used to,” he said.
“And meeting new friends, that is probably the big thing.”
