WERRIBEE suffered a shock loss to Coburg by three points in the VFL on Sunday.
Going into the match, Coburg had won just three games for the year however, that meant nothing when the ball was bounced.
The Richmond VFL affiliate side took a six-point lead into quarter time before extending that to 31 at the main break.
From there Werribee began to fight back, with goals to Ben McKinley and Ayden Kennedy helping to close the gap to 21 at three-quarter time.
The onslaught continued to start the final term as back-to-back goals from Kieran Harper followed by a major from Ben Warren allowed the Tigers to hit the front for the first time since the early stage of the match.
However, there was one more twist to come, with Coburg’s Ben Clifton putting his side back in front late in the game.
The 9.12 (66) to 9.9 (63) loss is Werribee’s sixth for the year.
Post match, Werribee head coach Scott West was disappointed with the attitude his players brought to the game.
“We didn’t come with a want to compete early in the game,” he said.
“They did, and they got the result. That’s not a skill thing, it’s not something you train for, it’s attitude. Across the board we were down in that area.
“You can’t switch flicks in this game. You have to want to do it. In the end, sometimes when you’re down by that much, you’ve got nothing to lose by taking the game on – and that’s what we did.”
Werribee will look to bounce back this week when it takes on North Ballarat.
