JEFF Bell is used to being the boss – calling the shots for a decade as principal at two Hobsons Bay schools.
But at age 54, Jeff is no longer the teacher – he is now the student.
Last year the veteran educator made the life-changing decision to hang up his whiteboard marker and join the Victoria Police.
Speaking to Star from the Academy, Jeff said he had wanted to join the police force when he finished high school in 1974, but was considered too short for the job, so instead became a physical education teacher and eventually principal.
“When the police had their advertising campaign cranked up last year (calling for new recruits) I thought, this sounds like something I should investigate,” he said.
“All of a sudden – bang I’m here.”
Prior to joining the force, Jeff was principal of Altona Meadows Primary School for six years and Laverton P-12 College for four years after that.
At last week’s council meeting Hobsons Bay City Council awarded Jeff with a certificate of appreciation for his work with the Laverton Community Renewal.
Councillor Bill Tehan described Jeff as a “tremendous member of society”.
In describing Laverton P-12 College Cr Tehan said: “I think what stands out is not just the bricks and mortar but the discipline and respect that Jeff has taught the students and their families.
“The highest accolade is what you deserve.”
Jeff told Star that being recognised by the council was fantastic and despite his surprise career change he loved being principal of Laverton College.
But Jeff is a firm believer in following your dreams.
“I’ve always believed age isn’t a barrier to do anything,” he said.
“Have a crack at it – whether you’re successful or not, that’s not important.
“If you have a dream, pursue it.”
