THE Melbourne Knights have secured their place in the Mirabella Cup semi-finals after a 1-0 victory over Green Gully on Wednesday night.
The Cavaliers went into the match knowing that regardless of the result they were already through to the semi-final stage of the competition.
The Knights needed only a draw to get through leaving a nervous wait for Hume City, which sits in third place.
Green Gully missed a golden opportunity to open the scoring early in the match when Pasquale Vizzari was left one-on-one with the goal keeper but sprayed his shot wide.
It didn’t take long for the Knights to make The Cavaliers pay for the mistake.
A fantastic cross from the right wing into Brandon Zezovski who volleyed the ball into the back on the net gave the Knights a crucial 1-0 advantage.
Both sides continued to contest hard in the lead up to half time but neither was able to break through on the scoreboard.
Knight Jacob Colosimo took a shot just before half time from a tough angle which was well saved by Green Gully and ensured the margin would remain at one going into the break.
Despite being in a situation where both teams would now qualify for the next stage of the Mirabella Cup, neither took a backwards step in the second half.
They continued to send numbers forward in search of goals but the scores were not added to.
The Knights held on for the 1-0 win and booked their place in the semi-finals.
