A GROUP of Victorian female musicians and singers have created an acoustic album paying tribute to the legendary performer David Bowie.
Among them is the band Parapluie made up Newport residents Ange and Bridget, along with Williamstown teenager Tess.
The talented trio recorded an interpretation of ‘Starman’ for the Bowie compilation.
The album – titled ‘The Girls who Sold the World’ – will be launched at the Wesley Anne in Northcote on Sunday.
“We all went to school together at Williamstown High and discovered a mutual love of music about six years ago,” Tessa said.
“We were best friends first before we decided to start writing music.
“We have a lot of fun when we rehearse and play gigs, always laughing and mucking around.
“We also really love writing and singing songs that have a lot of meaning to us – we feel very blessed in that regard.”
The girls are all studying different university courses including media, arts and midwifery but still find time to rehearse.
“Also we’re just so comfortable on stage with one another, it’s seriously like we’re just sitting around someone’s backyard bonfire giving them a little sing-song,” Ange said.
The 19-year-old recently took part in the finals of the state’s largest tertiary singing competition UniVoice.
She was awarded first runner-up after playing an original song with friend Caleb Tong accompanying her on the cello.
Ange said she was “absolutely elated” to do so well in the contest which she entered on a whim after seeing a UniVoice audition poster.
‘The Girls Who Sold the World’ will be launched the Wesley Anne, Northcote on Sunday October 28 at 7.30pm. $10 on the door. See http://girlssoldworld.wordpress.com for more details.
